Recently, I finished digging out part of our backyard so that we can install a DIY patio and fire pit. Normally this sort of thing wouldn’t take all that long but because this part of the yard is covered in thick ivy, there are hundreds, if not thousands, of roots to cut, dig and hack through 😬
I was feverishly chopping away a couple of weeks back and took a moment to pause and look at the progress. As my eyes took it all in, I couldn’t help but notice all of the roots that had been severed over the past few weeks. Some were tiny and some were big. Some were much harder to cut through than others and I thought how much easier it would have been without having to cut through the roots.
As I was thinking this, the Lord revealed something that deeply impacted me - and I wanted to take a moment to share it with you.
He showed me that just as I had to cut through hundreds if not thousands of roots, so He has to do the same thing in my heart…
Except he’s not chopping through ivy - he’s cutting through all of the seemingly tiny and big things that keep me from Him - both the known and unknown.
God reminded me that he knows our hearts better than anyone else and that his heart-work will be life long.
As you and I both know, those little roots often don’t seem like a problem at all. In fact, they can be disguised as the “good things” of this world until they turn into something much bigger and go much deeper.
So, how can we take heed to the call of Colossians 2:7 and “let our roots grow down into him” instead of anything else?
To start, here are a few questions I found myself asking that may be helpful to talk to God about:
- What are the “big” roots in my heart that need to be dug out?
- How did they get there?
- Why would I want to put strain on my relationship with God?
- Is there a root I can cut out right now?
You can supplement those questions by praying through Psalm 139:23-24:
If our hearts are sincere God will certainly show us the roots that need to be dug out to make space for Him.
