What is your great aim in life? What is it that you long for? Have you ever paused long enough to even ask the simple yet profound question, “what do I want?”

Last week the question, “what do you want?” came to my mind on two separate occasions through two entirely different sources. And whenever something like that happens I try to lean in.

The answer to that question came in the form of another question, as I was reading through Jeremiah. Jeremiah 9:24a says:

“But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the LORD..”

So, the question I asked myself in response to the first question was: “Could anything be greater than truly knowing God?”

Not knowing about God but knowing God.

The answer was a resounding "no" - nothing could be greater than truly knowing God (and being known by him).

In fact, if I could sum up the main purpose of the Kairos Journal in three words it would be to know God better.

The beautiful and mysterious thing about knowing God is that there is no one-size-fits all formula. God created each of us to be unique and, because of that, how you experience God will most likely be different than the person next to you.

Archibald Alexander, an American Presbyterian minister who became the first professor at Princeton Theological Seminary in 1812, did valuable research on the nature and dynamics of experiencing God.

Here’s what the C.S. Lewis Institute had to say of his research:

“One of the great lessons from his book, Thoughts on Religious Experience, is that there is no single way to experience God. His wide spectrum of narratives provides freedom that each person is unique; although there will be common ways of knowing God, there is never a standard one-size-fits-all. One of his final challenges is, regardless of age, to ’cherish and diligently cultivate genuine piety.’”

It’s important to note there are common ways of knowing God - through prayer, meditation, worship, Bible reading, etc. - even if we may experience him differently.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus himself says, “This is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent .” (John 17:3)

Eternal life is knowing God personally. It’s not just knowledge about God but an intimate and eternal fellowship with Him that begins by grace through faith in Christ Jesus our Lord.

I pray that the Lord would open the eyes of your heart to experience the love of Christ in a fuller way today.

By his grace, may we grow in the depth of our understanding of Him.
