Where is your mind?

In my Bible in a Year plan, I recently came across one of the first verses I ever memorized in Isaiah - one that is probably pretty familiar to you:

“You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” Isaiah 26:3 (NLT)

The CSB version says it this way: “You will keep the mind that is dependent on you in perfect peace, for it is trusting in you.”

Actually, most translations use the word “mind” - KJV, ESV, NIV - to name a few. As much of an encouragement this perfect peace is, I found myself wondering what exactly is meant here by “mind.”

In his commentary, David Guzik does a great job explaining this further:

"To be kept in this perfect peace, our mind must be stayed. According to Strong’s Dictionary, the Hebrew word sawmak comes from the root 'to prop,' and has the idea 'to lean upon or take hold of…bear up, establish, uphold, lay, lean, lie hard, put, rest self, set self, stand fast, stay (self), sustain.'"

He goes on to ask of all who consider themselves to be a disciple of Jesus Christ: What sustains your mind? What does your mind lean upon? What upholds your mind?

If what David says is true, that you keep your mind stayed on whatever you are trusting, the follow-up question must be, “What do you keep your mind fixed on?" or "What do you think about most of the time?”

What do you think about?

Time for a thought audit. If you’ve never done one it’s quite simple. Take inventory of the thoughts you’ve had so far today. If you can’t think back to this morning before you had your coffee just consider the last hour. What was driving your thoughts? What direction were they headed? Where are they at right now?

Take it a step further and scribble down the thoughts that occupy most of your headspace so that you can visually see it. Whatever you find that isn’t trusting on God - anything that is threatening to crowd Him out - ask the Lord to take the reins and cast it out. Rinse and repeat.

Our gracious God understands more than anyone the battle we face in our minds. He understands our weaknesses and, more than anything, He wants us to turn to Him for help. He beckons us to fix our thoughts on Him because His peace is greater than anything this world has to offer.

In closing, I’d like to ask a question and leave you with a challenge. It is of no surprise that Satan wants our minds to be fixed on anything but the Lord. However, my question is this: What are you purposely inputting into your mind on a regular basis? What thoughts are threatening to take God’s place simply because you’ve gotten too caught up in a Netflix show or are over attached to the News?

My challenge for you is to be ridiculously honest in examining the things you are choosing to fixate on and cast out anything that is stealing from the peace God wants to give you. Even question the seemingly “good” things you enjoy.

I promise, His peace is better.

Heavenly Father, give us the strength to fix our minds fully on You today so that we may have the perfect peace You promise. Point out anything that is attempting to steal Your heavenly peace and cast it out. Your unfailing love is better than life itself. May my heart’s greatest desire be to glorify Your name and share Your love with everyone I encounter today. Amen.
